The brief

What Hancock asked for

They were losing jobs to contractors with a stronger presence on Google.

Scope

What we did for Hancock

  • 55-page website: 14 service pages, 27 area pages and a blog
  • Quote form beside the opening, with its own thank-you page
  • Enquiry tracking set up in Google Analytics 4
  • WhatsApp button on every page
  • A plain-text summary of the business for AI assistants (llms.txt)

Site structure

Where everything sits on the Hancock site

The Hancock sitemap holds 54 pages, reached from a menu of Home, Services, Areas, Gallery, Blog, About and Contact. The thank-you page a customer sees after asking for a quote is deliberately left out of it.

Eight plastering services

Plastering, skimming, rendering, floating plaster, pebble dashing, Venetian plastering, plaster refurbishment and insurance repair work. The rendering page explains why failing render matters, walks through how a rendering job runs and answers five questions, from cure times to removing blown render.

Six painting services

Interior and exterior painting, wallpapering, sash window painting, commercial decorating and eco-friendly decorating, each with its own page and quote prompt.

27 area pages

Each town page is written about the houses in that town. Ruislip's opens on interwar semis built on London Clay, where settlement cracking is routine, then covers what tends to go wrong in that housing stock, from cracked bay window lintels to mock-Tudor render panels.

Four blog posts

How long plaster takes to dry, whether a wall needs a skim coat or a full re-plaster, the signs render needs repair and the best time of year for exterior painting and rendering. The skimming post includes a test a homeowner can try with their knuckles: a dull sound means the plaster is still bonded, a hollow one means it has blown. Each post ends with a quote prompt and four recent jobs from the gallery.

The homepage, top to bottom

The quote form's drop-down lists all 14 services. Below it come four assurances (City & Guilds certification, fixed prices, no subcontractors and Checkatrade reviews), then the service cards in two sets, plastering first and painting second, a row of figures, a sample of finished work and three reasons to choose Hancock. The cancellation notice, the list of towns and the three newest blog posts close the page.

Gallery and company pages

A gallery of finished work, an about page, the contact page with its quote form, and the terms and privacy pages. On the contact page the cancellation notice sits inside the form, just above the Send Enquiry button.

The build

The structure behind Hancock's 54 pages

Service and area pages follow one pattern, so a customer who reads about rendering in one town finds the same layout in the next. We matched the structured data to that pattern, which is part of how we approach SEO, AEO and GEO for a trade business.

Built in Astro

All 54 pages, the 27 area pages among them, are built as plain HTML before anyone visits.

Schema markup

The homepage describes a GeneralContractor serving 27 named towns. Each service and area page adds a Service entry with its own FAQs, blog posts are marked up as BlogPosting, and the contact page as a ContactPage.

An llms.txt file

For AI tools it sets out the City & Guilds certification, fixed-price quotes agreed before work starts, a team of four with no subcontractors, the Checkatrade listing and the £100 fee for cancelling inside 48 hours, followed by every service and area.

The screens

Hancock's homepage on a wide screen

The "Get your fixed price." form takes the right side of the opening screen, level with the headline, so the first thing a customer sees is the way to ask for a quote.

Hancock on a phone

On a phone the order runs headline, call button, View Services, then the form, so anyone who would rather ring can do it before scrolling.

Design decisions

Hancock's layout choices

The quote form sits beside the headline

On desktop the "Get your fixed price" form is part of the opening screen. On a phone it follows straight after the headline and call button.

WhatsApp that says which page you're on

The WhatsApp message starts "Hi Hancock, I'm looking at your…" and names the page, so whoever picks up knows what the customer was reading.

One card per service

Services are laid out as short cards, each with a sentence on what the job involves and a link to its own page.

Navy, white and a bright blue

A clean, high-contrast palette with a rounded headline face, picked to look tidy and trustworthy rather than flashy.

The trade

Building websites for plasterers and decorators

With plastering and painting, the customer is paying for a finish they won't see until the job is done. A site for this trade has to show finished work and explain the job the way someone who does it would. On Hancock that's the "A sample of the finish." section on the homepage, the gallery and the blog posts on drying times and skimming against re-plastering.

The housing matters as much as the trade. A plasterer working in interwar suburbs meets the same cracks again and again, so the area pages talk about the houses in each town instead of swapping the town name. For a decorator the Google profile is worth keeping busy with job photos while the identity fields are left alone, as our guide to editing a Google Business Profile safely explains. There's more on web design for painters and decorators and SEO for painters and decorators.

If you plaster, paint or decorate and want a page for each job and each town you cover, tell me about the work you take on, the jobs that pay best and the towns you'd rather not drive to.

"I had a site for my 1 man company for years that never really gained much traction so I decided to bring it up to date. Thanks again Dan."
