The starting point

Where the old RLE site fell short

Our review of the old WordPress site found area pages that were 65–71% identical in wording.

Scope

What we did for RLE

  • 59-page website: around 20 service pages, around 25 area pages and 5 blog posts
  • Prices for 13 load sizes, from £60 + VAT to £360 + VAT for a full truck
  • Quotes by WhatsApp photo, offered from the opening screen
  • Redirects for 58 old page addresses, so links to the old site still work
  • Structured data describing the business, its services and its prices

Site structure

The RLE site, page by page

RLE's sitemap lists 59 addresses, and apart from the five blog posts every one sits a single step below the homepage. Most of the headings are phrased as a customer's question, such as "How much does rubbish removal cost in London?"

19 kinds of job

House, flat, loft, garage and office clearances, probate and hoarder clearances, rip-outs, rubble, fridges, white goods, mattresses, fly-tipping and skip hire, among others. The house clearance page works through what a three-bed clearance costs, what happens on the day, whether a skip would do instead, and clearing a home after a bereavement or years of collecting.

25 town pages

Sixteen rubbish removal pages from Beckenham to Petts Wood, six house clearance pages that reach Sevenoaks and Sidcup, and three more for bulky waste in Bromley, waste clearance in Sidcup and south London. The Bromley page weighs the council's £80 garden bin against a one-off load, and explains why the council's bulky collection, which lifts from the front of the property only, struggles with flats above High Street shops.

Prices and the process

The pricing page holds the load table, a weight-based rate for soil, rubble and concrete, and the items that cost extra. Next to it sit a house clearance cost guide, a step-by-step page that runs from sending a photo to paying at the end, and before-and-after photos from RLE's own jobs.

Five blog posts

Bulky waste collections compared across ten councils, a landlord's guide to end-of-tenancy clearance, skip permit costs in Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich, sofa disposal under the POPs rules, and what a waste transfer note is.

The rest

About, contact, the blog index and two hub pages, one listing every service and one listing every area.

The build

The data behind RLE's price list

Each row of the RLE price table also appears in the pricing page's structured data as an Offer with a unit price, and the page shows the date the prices were last checked. Keeping the visible price and the marked-up price identical is a basic part of our search and AI visibility work.

Built in Astro

Every one of the 59 pages is plain HTML, and Google Analytics only loads once a visitor presses Accept.

Schema markup

The homepage marks up a LocalBusiness with 20 named areas, two contact points, the Environment Agency registration and CHAS accreditation as credentials, 27 priced offers and eight FAQs. The pricing page adds an OfferCatalog of 28 offers, each with a unit price.

An llms.txt file

It sets out the 13 load sizes with their prices, the company number and CHAS membership, same-day collection for bookings made before 12pm, and no travel charge, tolls or weekend premium. It also says plainly that RLE doesn't buy or value contents.

The screens

RLE's opening screen at full width

The licence number, CHAS Standard, phone, email and opening hours run along a thin bar at the top. Under the headline, the first sentence gives the price range: £60 to £360 plus VAT.

RLE on a phone

The first lines on a phone give the price range and say the two-person crew does the loading, followed by the quote, call and WhatsApp buttons.

Design decisions

What we built into the RLE pages

A truck that fills as you choose

Above the price table, four buttons (quarter, half, three-quarter and full truck) fill a drawing of the truck, so a customer can picture their load before reading the prices.

WhatsApp a photo

The opening screen has a button for sending a photo of the rubbish on WhatsApp, next to the quote and call buttons. The price is confirmed before any work starts.

A bar that steps aside while you type

On a phone, Call, WhatsApp and Quote are fixed to the bottom of every page. The bar hides while someone is typing in a form, so it never covers the field.

A registration you can check

A card links to the Environment Agency public register, so a customer can check the waste carrier registration before they book.

The trade

Pricing clearance work in public

Most clearance firms quote over the phone because every load looks different, which leaves the customer unable to judge the price until somebody calls back. When I build for a clearance business, I turn the firm's own way of pricing into a table, give a rough guide to what fits in each load, and leave the final figure to a photo. On RLE the guide runs from one armchair to a three-bed house.

The awkward cases need the same honesty. Rubble weighs far more than furniture, so it's priced by weight, and fridges and mattresses cost extra because they cost more to dispose of. Putting that on the page saves an argument on the doorstep. Plain prices and question-shaped headings also give AI assistants something concrete to repeat, as our piece on how ChatGPT chooses what to quote explains. I've written more on websites for rubbish clearance companies and SEO for rubbish removal firms.

"I had a site for my 1 man company for years that never really gained much traction so I decided to bring it up to date. Thanks again Dan."
